A reward for the best PEI Potato Recipe!

The Red Sands Tourism Group, in partnership with the PEI Potato Board, is looking for the best PEI Potato Recipe EVER ... and they're prepared to pay for it!

As part of the upcoming Red Sands Potato Fest, September 10th, which celebrates Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site of Canada and Parks Canada Agency's 100th Anniversary, the Red Sands Tourism Group invite submissions for the Best Potato Recipe Ever.

The winning recipe entry will receive a $500. cash prize from The Prince Edward Island Potato Board. As well as bragging rights, the winner's recipe will be featured on the PEI Potato Board website recipe index.

 The Red Sands Potato Fest, a Fall Flavours Festival event, takes place on Saturday, September 10th, with a full day's activities. Special Host, Chef Mark McEwan, will be a guest judge of the potato recipe and host of the Cultural Potato Feast. Chef McEwan is a TV personality. acclaimed restaurant owner. gourmet grocerateur . author of the best-selling book, "Great Food At Home". He is host of Fine Living Network's ‘The Heat with Mark McEwan', a judge on‘Superstar Chef Challenge' and head judge on Food Network Canada's 2010 ‘Top Chef Canada', making him one of the most recognizable faces today in the Canadian fine food industry.

The feature event takes place in the evening, Chef McEwan and local chefs JD Runnels and Rob Pendergast will present an inspiring menu at the Potato Cultural Feast one of the Fall Flavours Festival's Signature Event.  Featured  will be  Chef  McEwans Lobster  Poutine!   The dinner is $65. Plus taxes with two seatings (4:30 and 7:00 pm). Advanced tickets are recommended and are available online at www.fallflavours.ca

Other events at Potato Fest include:

  • Parks Canada Interpreters in period costume sharing culture and traditions of the French, and Acadian Cultures.
  • Traditional Acadian games, potato sack races, potato spoon races.
  • Entertainment featuring 10 Strings and a Goat Skin, as well as Gord Belsher and Cynthia Macleod
  • Special lunch service featuring Fricot, Meat Pie, Gallettes blanchs and Potato Fudge.
  • Re-enactment of the Annual Gift Exchange between the Mi'kmaq and the French with Parks Canada interpreters and Mi'kmaq artisans, stories and teachings
  • Re-enactment of the musket drills typical of an 18th Century small French fort.
  • Best Potato Recipe judging in Main tent with Chef Mark McEwan and The PEI Potato Board.
  • Potato Fest is part of the Fall Flavours Festival, a month long culinary celebration highlighting authentic Island tastes and traditions that takes place during September in communities across Prince Edward Island. 2010 Winner for Best Darn Potato Recipe in PEI

Choosen for it's simplicty and ecomonic all around feel good family meal, full of flavour and great texture, this recipe was overall winner in the judges eyes.

Potato SausageSoup
½lb Italian sausage (mildor hot)
1 large onion, chopped
1medium greenpepper, diced
1 large carrot, grated or diced
2potato, diced (Yukon Gold or Superior Red)
2canschicken broth
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes or tomatoes in liquid
1cup water
1 garlic clove, crushed
1tsp. salt
½ tsp. pepper
½cup orzo
¾ cup frozen corn
In Dutch oven, brown and crumble sausage; drain. Add remaining ingredients; bring to boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 60-70 minutes.
